There are many people who don't like "rules" or structure. They may even say, "that's stupid, I'm not going to do that."
When rules and structure are established by a family, company, school, or government, there has been thought behind establishing the rule. For example, one of my expectations when speaking to middle/high schoolers is "roof's up, hoods down." If a student were to question the legitimacy (and it's always ok to ask - that's a positive sign) of my expectation, I would share the history of removing headgear when entering a building.
In medieval times, the medieval knights wore armor. Anytime they entered a room, if they removed their helmet, it showed a sign of trust and respect. The knight felt safe enough to remove his protective helmet. This was also a sign of vulnerability by the knight.
So the next time you think a rule or structure might be dumb, think back to the history of establishing the rule. You might be surprised at what you find.
