I finished the book, It Takes What It Takes by Trevor Moawad this week. He writes about the power of "Neutral Thinking" that elite-level athletes use to become champions.
One of the big reasons for my success in sales and sales training is what I teach in transferring the feeling you feel about your solution to your target audience. I experienced it first hand when performing in an independent band in my mid 20's to early 30's. I witnessed the power of music first hand.
Trevor writes about the power of music in what he calls his version of Super Size Me through media. He wasn't hardening his arteries like cholesterol from fast food, he was hardening his attitudes and vision through:
- An hour to an hour and a half of hard-core metal rock
- An hour to an hour and a half of country music
- Watch the news
His reasoning, negative music and sounds are a big part of the hostage process relative to torture. Isolation and physiological torture, negative stimuli (music) has created a phenomenon called "give-up-itis." It was used in the Korean War.
One of the most sought after mental coaches in sports had been broken in 26.5 days.
What's the point here?
The point is the power of music and how it impacts our mood.
I believe music can feed our soul or our flesh.
Our soul longs for being, longs for acceptance, and longs for connection with our creator.
Our flesh longs for pleasure, longs for impulse, and longs for more and more conquest.
I believe in self-audits. Do an audit of the music you consume, it may be time for a detox as proven by Trevor's brave experiment.
