Episode 658 - Expectations by the Expector
J. Warner Wallace is a Dateline featured cold-case homicide detective, popular national speaker and best-selling author. Yesterday he spoke at our church about the legitimacy of Jesus Christ without the use of the Bible. It was a fascinating study and in it he told a story of responding to a call while undercover. When the person who made the call didn't see the police uniform, he was weary of Mr. Wallace's ability to help him. It was only until a police office in full uniform showed up that the man felt safe.
We have expectations and often time if what we expect doesn't look like what we expected, we aren't as convinced. Sometimes, what we expect to happen HAS happened even when it doesn't look exactly like we expected.

The Means Bubble - Religion
As we wrap up our series, The Means Bubble, I'd like to share a comment I found in a religious chat:
The idea that "the ends justify the means" admits that there is something inherently wrong with "the means". Indeed, it admits that "the means" are actually unjustified by themselves. The claim, then, is that although "the means" are unjustifiable in themselves, that a particular outcome that is achieved by them results in the justification of the unjustified.
What a great perspective to consider. The ends never justify the means in religion because God doesn't value the end result more than the means and activity we do on a daily basis.
If we follow the golden rule and do unto others as we want done unto us, we will walk in righteousness and all means are justified.

When the ends justify the means, integrity, morals, and truth become compromised. In today's micro-podcast, we address The Means Bubble in education. The agenda in public schools feels like students are being taught on how they need to think and not on english, math, history, etc.
The good news is the more the bubble inflates, the closer it is to popping.

The Means Bubble - Politics
When we think about the ends justifying the means we may think about politics first. Many, if not all, politicians believe in their ideals so much they may compromise what's "right" to get the job done.
I found this on Wikipedia - The end justifies the means is a phrase of Sergey Nechayev, the 19th century Russian revolutionary. It means that if a goal is morally important enough, any method of getting it is acceptable. ... It was part of a political philosophy called consequentialism. The basic idea is that a policy can be judged by its outcome.
Like anything you inflate, when you inflate the means bubble in politics it will eventually pop. I think it may have already popped with our last election.

Social Justice is an important topic that often opponents of a viewpoint try and trap others with. My heart is for all to have opportunities to succeed in whatever they want to do. The problem with "the ends justify the means" mindset and Social Justice is the diversity of thought we have as a species.
Without one foundation used as a framework for society, you inflate a bubble that may pop into anarchy and lawlessness.
How, then, do you fight injustices, you ask?
You, as an individual, love your neighbor, the individual, and when individuals feel love and appreciation from other individuals, it changes society as a whole.

The Means Bubble - Sports
"Whatever it takes to win. That's it."
The quote came from NBA player Khris Middleton of the Milwaukee Bucks after they defeated the Atlanta Hawks to go to the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns. Although the quote came after he was asked about his 32 point effort, it could also apply to his ability to trick the referee with his flopping.
Flopping isn't new in professional sports, European soccer has been doing it for years, now it's rearing its ugly head in other sports.
The purpose of flopping is to exaggerate the contact made by another player so the official can call a violation. Now players in the NBA are doing it without any contact. Think professional wrestling on a basketball court.
The final goal for players is the championship (the end).
To win a championship, a team must beat the teams in their way (the means).
To beat a team players will do whatever it takes (justified).
When you justify the means to win a championship, you cheapen the championship. With the increase of camera and viewable angles, we, the fans, can see how you are cheating the game. Eventually we'll stop watching which will impact the salary of the players. The bubble will pop when we the fans won't allow it.
Instead of cheating the game, enjoy playing the game the right way and within the rules established for fair play.

Episode 652 - The Means Bubble Intro
Bubbles are typically associated with dramatic asset price increases followed by a collapse. Bubbles arise if the price exceeds the asset’s fundamental value - New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics
Definition of the end justifies the means
—used to say that a desired result is so good or important that any method, even a morally bad one, may be used to achieve it
They believe that the end justifies the means and will do anything to get their candidate elected.
The humanity of our species is on a rapid decline because individuals hold on to the idea that the end justifies the means in what the believe in. This has created The Means Bubble. In other words, it is a way to live and behavior that is going to pop. When exactly? No one knows, however, it feels like it may be sooner than later.

Multi-tasking doesn't work. Sorry to bring facts to a great story or idea, the facts about our brain trumps what some think is a benefit when the multi-task. In the book, The 4 Disciplines of Execution, the authors give a great example of focus through the job of an air traffic control and the multiple planes on their radar.

Episode 650 - What's the Score?
It's fun shooting hoops with friends. We laugh, make jokes, and are pretty chill until someone says, let's break up the group into two teams and play a game.
Once it's a game, where score is taking place, people raise their intensity and effort to win. To increase the effort even more, pull out a scoreboard and display the score to everyone.
When I speak to students, I encourage them to ignore the score in life. The scoreboard in life can be harmful to our mental health. The scoreboard in business, however, is essential to an increased level of effort and intensity by members of your team.

Episode 649 - Trust in the Son
I was winded this morning after my jog and took a seat on the back porch of where I'm staying in the Greater Seattle area. It was chilly and the fog was thick over the water of the Puget Sound. When I checked the weather this morning it displayed a high of 81 degrees and sunny. You would have never thought that if you saw what I saw - the thickness of the fog.
Sometimes we are in seasons of our life that are foggy. The fog is so thick we don't know where it begins and the water ends.
We may have heard that the sun is coming to breakthrough the fog, however, there is no evidence with what we see.
Be patient with the sun and trust that he will come through in the end.
