The Focus Group
Monday Jan 18, 2021
Monday Jan 18, 2021
There was an episode of the television sitcom from years ago, Frasier, that I found applicable to what a lot of us go through on a daily basis.
In the show, season three, episode 23, titled The Focus Group, Frasier's show is being reviewed by twelve people who are a part of the focus group. The funny thing is Frasier and his producer, Roz, can see and here the focus group.
Eleven of the twelve members of the focus group loved their show and one did not.
What do you think Frasier focused on? The eleven who loved his show or the one who didn't? Yep. You guessed right! He focused on the one.
Sound familiar? How often do we hyper-focus on the one individual who isn't in to what we are saying or doing when we could be focusing on the eleven who really enjoy what we say.

Instead of Complaining, Look for the Reason behind Rules
Friday Jan 15, 2021
Friday Jan 15, 2021
There are many people who don't like "rules" or structure. They may even say, "that's stupid, I'm not going to do that."
When rules and structure are established by a family, company, school, or government, there has been thought behind establishing the rule. For example, one of my expectations when speaking to middle/high schoolers is "roof's up, hoods down." If a student were to question the legitimacy (and it's always ok to ask - that's a positive sign) of my expectation, I would share the history of removing headgear when entering a building.
In medieval times, the medieval knights wore armor. Anytime they entered a room, if they removed their helmet, it showed a sign of trust and respect. The knight felt safe enough to remove his protective helmet. This was also a sign of vulnerability by the knight.
So the next time you think a rule or structure might be dumb, think back to the history of establishing the rule. You might be surprised at what you find.

Love Your Enemies
Thursday Jan 14, 2021
Thursday Jan 14, 2021
The true character of someone is revealed in how they treat their enemy. Let’s think of enemies in the non-war sense. Let’s think of enemies as someone who doesn’t believe, live, or support your belief system. For example a conservative could be an enemy of a liberal. A Rams fan is an enemy of a Seahawks fan. How do you treat them? Do you mock them when you beat them? Look at the mockery coming from the left after the Biden victory or attack on the Capital building. We seem to be living in a world that mocks our enemies and that is revealing who you truly are.

Everyday Negative Talk
Wednesday Jan 13, 2021
Wednesday Jan 13, 2021
Sometimes being negative can be found in the way we talk. Growing up in Hawaii there is a culture of asking a question from a negative perspective. I discovered this a few months ago about my life. Often times I will ask a question negatively. Here is what I mean, instead of asking, “Do you want this?” I would ask, “You don’t want this?” Or instead of, “Do you like this?” I would ask, “You don’t like this?” Now that I’ve identified it with my speech, I can become intentional about breaking free from years of practice. Have you noticed anything about your actions that can be changed from the negative?

Who Are We To Trust?
Tuesday Jan 12, 2021
Tuesday Jan 12, 2021
There are so many rumors going around right now about Martial Law and the arrests of Congressmen and Congresswomen that I don’t trust.
I don’t trust Big Tech’s censoring - who are they to claim they know the right way to speak? Feels like Revenge of the Nerds 6
I don’t trust our Government’s dealings with outside countries.
I don’t trust our Politicians who clearly have agendas contrary to what they actually campaigned on.
The news outlets aren’t giving us the news, they are giving us their opinion of how they view reality. It’s negative and I don’t trust them.
Who are we to trust?
Trust.
In.
God.

Naming Our Inconvenient Feelings

Philippe Perry writes in her book, The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read, about the inconvenient feelings we get when triggered by our children (or anyone else we have a relationship with). When we ask ourselves “why” the answer can be found in our own childhood

What To Do When It Doesn't Go Your Way?
Thursday Jan 07, 2021
Thursday Jan 07, 2021
We are getting closer to the dust settling on the election and it looks like we will have a majority of democrats running our country for the next four years. There is enough evidence to show something very fishy happened while we all slept in the early morning of Wednesday, November 4 in only the swing states that could challenge the swearing in of Joe Biden as President.
It doesn't look like a challenge is coming so what do we do?
We love our neighbor.
When things don't go your way the only thing you can do is improve yourself and love the neighbor to your left, right, and across the street. More than a protest, that, in my opinion, is the greatest action to change. A one-to-one approach is much greater than a one-to-many approach.
Keep your head up, for we still live in the greatest land of all.

Stay Away From Constructive “Criticism”
Wednesday Jan 06, 2021
Wednesday Jan 06, 2021
As someone who is a producer of things, especially those who are creative, it’s important to receive constructive feedback and not constructive criticism. Constructive feedback from the right people, those who are closest to you, will help you improve your craft. Once you’ve released or completed something, don’t ask others (outside of your close knit feedback group) what they think. If they want to share their feedback that’s fine, just don’t ask for it. Because you’ve already received the feedback needed from those closest to you.

Embrace What's Hard
Tuesday Jan 05, 2021
Tuesday Jan 05, 2021
What do you have in your life that's hard to do? There is a greater level of satisfaction when you are involved in doing something that's hard. If everything in your life is easy, your level of gratitude may be shallow because easy doesn't take the same amount of effort.
In the book, The Mr. Rodgers Effect, Anita Knight Kuhnley writes:
There are many variants of gratitude. Grace, Thankfulness, Appreciation, and Awe & Wonder. The word gratitude comes from the latin word: Gratia, which means grace.
The next time you are involved in doing something hard, admit it. Admit that what you are doing is hard. Once you realize it's going to be hard actually makes the job easier.
Most of the time, people don't want to do things that are hard because they may fail. This is where grace comes in. The joy is in the journey not in the outcome, so give yourself some grace and be grateful that you are doing something that's hard to do.
