Expecting an Obstacle
Monday Dec 21, 2020
Monday Dec 21, 2020
A reporter asked the Seattle Seahawks' head coach, Pete Carroll if their play in the fourth quarter has him concerned.
Pete Carroll responded by saying, "you guys do that, you guys go ahead and be concerned, we did exactly what we wanted to do . . . I ain't worried about it at all . . . on this game, against this team, we neutralized their strength, and that's what we needed to do to get the win. I don't see anything negative about this game. You guys can look for it, I just don't see it. I'm not worried about it, you can worry about it, I'm not worried about it at all."
The report then reacted by justifying the reason for asking, "I think it's a valid question," he said, "You guys had 39 yards in the fourth quarter and a 20-3 lead. I'm not being combative. I'm just asking a question of how you feel about it."
Pete then said, "I didn't say you were [combative], I said, 'you guys are entitled to do it however you want to do it,' I just don't see it like that."
Even though the reporter was looking at what may be a concern, Pete Carroll looked at it as a tremendous positive. Not because they won, because they were prepared for exactly what would happen, happened.
What a tremendous example for all of us to follow. The Seahawks were leading 20-3 heading into the fourth quarter and held on to eventually win, 20-15. With only 39 yards in the quarter and an interception thrown by Russell Wilson, the reporter, and some of us loyal fans, were worried.
Pete, the head coach? He's not worried at all. The reason he's not worried, or concerned, is because he expected this type of game before it even kicked off.
"The score is right about where we thought it would be," Pete said, "we knew it would be a tight game."
What are you expectations when it comes to the nuances in the game of life we all play?
Even when others are pointing fingers and asking, "what's wrong," after a win, are you confident through the obstacles because you were prepared for them?

How Will You Remember 2020
Friday Dec 18, 2020
Friday Dec 18, 2020
****EPISODE 250****
If you look at 2020 as a turd you are about to flush down the toilet because 2021 is going to be incredible - be careful. Having an outlook of 2020 being terrible is more about your outlook than the results of 2020.
As you reflect on 2020, what good can you find about the year? Finding the bad or negative is easy. Take some time to find all the good this year brought to you and your loved ones.
Often, I will hear people say, "we'll, Troy, you aren't being realistic." What does that mean exactly?
These two things happened in 2020.
I was laid off and I wrote a book. Which one will I remember about 2020? I wrote my first book! A tremendous accomplishment.
How about these two things that are happening in 2020? I can't pay my bills and I've produced and stared in commercials. To be behind and in front of the camera is a passion of mine! To finally be back at it at the age of 50 years old (a 25 year drought) is something I would have never considered.
My point is that using "reality" as an excuse is just that - an excuse.
Find the good of 2020! You'll be glad you did especially for what's coming in January of 2021.

Perfecting Your Shot
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Yesterday, I was a guest on a year end podcast segment titled, “Yesterday.” 🤠 We talked about how the obstacles earlier in our life would help us in the current part of our life. One of the stories I shared was from the book, "Wooden," which described Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's college days at UCLA where the NCAA banned dunking the basketball. Kareem took it personally, thinking the rule was put in place because of him. John Wooden asked him what would he do about it and the result was perfecting the hook shot, which is what Kareem is known for to this day.
We all have challenges in our earlier life that we can look back to which turned out to be a positive outcome. When you are faced with a challenge today, how will you adapt and perfect your shot?

Only the Assured Thrive
Friday Dec 11, 2020
Friday Dec 11, 2020
There is a common phrase that reads: Only the Strong Survive. I was curious to where the expression came from and found that is was birthed through the idea of Natural Selection. Natural Selection is a part of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution (note the word THEORY not FACT) about only the strongest, "make it."
When I looked up the definition of survive, it read: continue to live or exist, especially in spite of danger or hardship. That kind of describes the world we live in today, doesn't it?
I'm a free thinker and I'd like to change the phrase to read: Only the Assured Thrive.
Thriving is when you grow or develop well or vigorously. Another definition is to prosper; flourish. In order to thrive we need to be assured. The definition of assured is confident; protected against discontinuance or change.
With all the changes that have hit us throughout 2020, being assured of your future will give you the confidence to thrive in this environment. My assurance comes from my relationship with the Lord which keeps me thriving even in the midst of chaos.

The Gift of Time
Thursday Dec 10, 2020
Thursday Dec 10, 2020
What's your reality?
If you are unemployed, is your reality that you are unemployed or is it that you've been given the gift of time? I'm unemployed and if I were to focus on that fact it would rob me of a unique time in my life where I've been blessed with the gift of time.
Many of you know, I like to read. It's changed my life and helped me write my first non-fiction book. Last year I set a goal to read 100 books in a year. It was very difficult to do and on December 31, 2019, I read my 100th book of the year. "There is no way I'm ever setting that goal again," I said after completing the task.
This year my reading goals were more about what can I read in a week, or what can I read in a month? Two reading goals were set this year: Read five books in a week (DONE) and read twenty books in a month (DONE).
When I completed my reading for the month of November this year, I came to a startling realization. I've read 80 books this year. With only a month to go, why not go for 100 books again. So I went for it. And now, on December 10, I start my 10th book of the month. I may read one book a day until the end of the year. Since November 28, I have read a book a day. Today will be the 13th day in a row I will have read a book.
The reality is I'm unemployed.
The reality is I have time.
What are you doing to take advantage of the gift of time?

Always Vote For Yourself
Wednesday Dec 09, 2020
Wednesday Dec 09, 2020
As a senior in high school, I had the opportunity to be the captain of our varsity basketball team. This was a big accomplishment since I had only started playing hoops two years prior and I wasn’t the best player on the team. After every player had cast their vote it ended up as a tie between the best player on the team and me. The difference was I didn’t vote for myself. Whenever you are participating in a vote where you are a potential candidate, always vote for yourself.

What's the Alternative?
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
Tomorrow is Wednesday, December 9, 2020. It was Thursday, April 9, 2020 when I was laid off.
When it first happened, I was excited, the severance was good, and nothing was going to stop me now! I would move my side-hustle to my primary revenue stream and finish my book! As the months went by, the book was finished and I realized moving my side-hustle wasn't going to happen. I would be an employee with two to three side hustles – at least while my kids are in school.
These last eight months have not gone as planned, yet if I start focusing on what's not happening, I'll find it and go back to feeling sorry for myself. Why go back? I refuse to not move forward. Today, and every day, is a chance to be grateful for what I have. You can move forward in your life as well.
Today, stand strong, smile, and say, "Today's going to be a great day!"
