The 24-Hour Rule
Friday Feb 28, 2020
Friday Feb 28, 2020
"The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat."
Growing up I remember hearing those words on the intro of ABC's Wide World of Sports. Then I'd watch as elite athletes competed to win the prize. Some would win, some would lose.
This may not happen to us as athletes, however it does happen to us as professionals, entrepreneurs, and business owners in our every day life. We feel the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
One thing I read about in a book written by John C. Maxwell is a rule he follows called The 24-Hour Rule. In the 24-Hour Rule, he only celebrates for 24 hours after a victory. In a defeat, he only allows himself to feel down about it for 24 hours.
By following the 24-Hour Rule you are giving yourself permission to let go of both the good and bad in your life so you can keep growing.
Growing is the overall objective for all of us...even greater than the thrill of victory.

How to Battle Self-Sabotage
Thursday Feb 27, 2020
Thursday Feb 27, 2020
On Monday I work my Chest and Back
On Wednesday I work my legs
On Friday I work my Shoulders, Biceps, and Triceps
Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday I run a mile, walk a mile then work my abs
It’s the same routine to work certain parts of my body.
What this does for my physical health, positive affirmations do for my mental health.
Self-sabotage erodes your self-confidence and self-esteem. It impacts your relationships with others. Every time you fail at something you’ve attempted to do you’ve ‘proven’ to yourself that you can’t do it. That you shouldn’t do it.
Self-sabotage is one of the devil’s best tools in his toolkit.
Taking a page from Trevor Moawad's book "It Takes What It Takes" my family and I recite positive affirmations together before we go to bed.
Everyday in my calendar I have a notification to remind me to read this when I wake up and when I go to bed:
I read -
My name is Troy Jonathan Ritchie and staring in 2020, I will produce the most successful faith-based films in the history of the United States.
My success will be attributed to the quality of storytelling that draws viewers in with a hope of forgiveness to the unforgivable.
I will achieve this through growing my personal brand and receiving favor from those of influence.
By the end of 2030, I will have received three Oscars.
Start incorporating positive affirmations in your life. You may be surprised by the results.

Is it Time to Cut the Cord?
Wednesday Feb 26, 2020
Wednesday Feb 26, 2020
Yesterday I was assigned to speak in the gym. One of the staff members told me before heading over there that I would be speaking to 600 Middle Schoolers.
YES!!!! I thought to myself. I was born for this!
As I walked in the gym I noticed the sound set up. It was a corded mic plugged into a small Karaoke speaker. I knew it wasn't ideal, little did I know it would impact the effectiveness of my talk.
I was limited in using my voice inflections for effect and drawing the audience in to my story and I was limited in my overall range of motion.
These aren't excuses. I still spit fire and students were impacted.
The lightbulb moment for me came when I walked out of the gym.
In life, there are so many of us that are extremely talented. We know what we can do however we find ourselves in situations that limit our ability to get in the zone we know we can get into.
Maybe it's a symbolic speaker that's too small and doesn't capture our true passion. Maybe it's a symbolic mic chord that is too short, limiting our range of motion. If so, it may be time to cut the chord and surround yourself with better elements.
You got it, now go #getit

Tomorrow is Lent
Tuesday Feb 25, 2020
Tuesday Feb 25, 2020
Today is Fat Tuesday; which means tomorrow is Lent.
We practice Lent in our family, not because we have too, because we want to. (Well, the kids don’t want to, it’s a subject of debate each year within the family).
There is nothing Biblical about participating in Lent. It’s a man-made tradition. So why participate in it?
One article wrote it best:
Lent is seen as a solemn observance and preparation of the death and resurrection of Jesus. It starts on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Easter Sunday.
It is a traditional time for fasting or giving something up or abstinence.
He compared it to how we carefully prepare for events in our personal lives (wedding, birthday, commencement) Lent invites us to make our minds and hearts ready for remembering Jesus’ life, death, and body resurrection.
In addition to what the family is giving up, I’m giving up notifications.
Yes, you heard right. I’m giving up notifications on my phone.
This is one area of my life that has taken over. I will only check my social media posts at certain times of the day.
Do you practice Lent? If so, what are you giving up?

Who or What Inspired You?
Monday Feb 24, 2020
Monday Feb 24, 2020
What does it mean to be inspired?
Inspiration is a feeling of enthusiasm you get from someone or something that gives you new and creative ideas. When you say, this inspires me, you mean someone, or something want to do or achieve something.
Think about the activities you are doing on a daily basis and what inspired you to do them in the first place.
If you are not doing anything in life that was sparked by inspiration, it’s time you add some activities you are passionate about.

Leaders Must Be Able to Follow
Friday Feb 21, 2020
Friday Feb 21, 2020
The definition of a leader according to John C. Maxwell is one that has followers. If you are leading and you have no followers, you are just on a walk. 😀. How then can a leader follow? Leaders follow those on their team that are an expert in their own space. Even though I’m leading the team, understanding my place and allowing others to shine is the key to growing a healthy team.

When Looking for a New Job...
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
Sometimes we are in positions that we aren't satisfied with. I was speaking with a friend the other day who is having trouble finding the next opportunity in their professional development.
Recruiters are trained to get you excited about an opportunity that you may never get. Sometimes we can get discouraged when we have so many interviews and none pan out.
I asked my friend of all the jobs applied or interviewed for, how many did they think would be a great fit for them.
"Four" was the response.
"Of the four," I asked, "which ones did you really, really want?"
"One."
There is a big difference not getting the job you want on one interview than not getting the jobs of many interviews.
When looking for a new opportunity, be a little selfish in knowing what you want. It's like going to a restaurant. How specific are you in knowing what you want for your meal?
Be specific in knowing what YOU want in your next opportunity and be honest with yourself in your assessment. Once you know what you truly want, your search will be much easier and you can transfer a feeling of confidence when interviewing.

What is True Diversity?
Wednesday Feb 19, 2020
Wednesday Feb 19, 2020
I watch and enjoy the show ER on Hulu and am fascinated with how one of their characters, Frank Martin, is accepted on the show.
He's an overweight, former military, former cop, white man that makes inappropriate comments that are racists and prejudice.
In Season 10 on an episode of Forgive and Forget, Frank has a heart attack and is saved by two doctors. Doctor Pratt, a black man and Neela Rasgotra an Indian women.
As Frank is lying there one of the surgeons asks Dr. Pratt to leave. Frank reaches out to Dr. Pratt and says, “please don’t leave.” So Dr. Pratt stayed with his friend.
The staff doesn't like how Frank talks to them, however they accepted him as being Frank.
In today's society however it feels like we are looking to shame people like Frank Martin. Gather them up so we can kick them out of our society.
What if we loved them?
Maybe that's what they were lacking from the beginning?

The Grand Gesture
Tuesday Feb 18, 2020
Tuesday Feb 18, 2020
In the book Deep Work, Cal Newport writes about The Grand Gesture.
From the book:
The key to developing a deep work habit is to move beyond good intentions and add routines and rituals to your working life so you may minimize the amount of your limited willpower necessary to transition into and maintain a state of unbroken concentration.
The Grand Gesture is when you make a radical change to your normal environment combined with a significant investment in effort or money - all dedicated to your deep work - which increases the perceived importance of the task.
